There’s no doubt that a heat pump can be one of the most energy-efficient HVAC systems on the market today. While these systems are great when they’re functioning normally, they can experience malfunctions just like any other type of HVAC system. Understanding how to approach these problems can help you to solve them quickly or get the repair service you need promptly to get your system back up and running like normal.

Blank Thermostat Screen

One problem you may experience with your heat pump is that your thermostat isn’t working properly. If the thermostat screen is blank, it can be a key indication that it’s not getting power like it needs to in order to function. A good place to start is to check the circuit breaker to make sure that it didn’t trip for some reason. If it did, simply reset the circuit breaker and give your system a few minutes to kick back on and start running.

If the circuit breaker isn’t tripped, try replacing the batteries in your thermostat. If putting in new batteries doesn’t solve the problem, then the issue likely lies with the thermostat itself or the wiring going to the thermostat. It can be helpful to have our heat pump service technicians come out and assess the wiring going to your thermostat to see if it’s loose or has another issue. If necessary, they can diagnose a faulty thermostat and replace it for you.

Running Non-Stop

One particularly frustrating issue you may run into with your heat pump is that it seems to be constantly running. Take a look at the settings on your thermostat, as they might be the culprit behind this issue. If you have your thermostat set to on instead of auto, the blower fan will continue to run 24/7. You’ll want to set your thermostat back to the auto setting so that it will only turn on the blower components whenever your heat pump is running.

Insufficient Heating or Cooling

One issue that you may run into is that your heat pump doesn’t seem to be providing sufficient heating or cooling for your home. There are a couple of different reasons that this may be happening. A great first place to start is to look at the air filter for your system. If the air filter is overly dirty, it can restrict the airflow inside of your ducts and won’t allow your system to deliver enough hot or cold air to the various rooms throughout your home.

If your air filter is in good condition, then check the outdoor condenser unit. If there is too much debris or even shrubbery up against the unit, it can restrict the airflow of the unit. When the outdoor unit doesn’t have sufficient airflow, it won’t be able to properly do its job, which leads to an uncomfortable indoor temperature.

If the problem doesn’t lie with your air filter or with debris against your condenser unit, it’s important to call in one of our professionals to evaluate the issue. The problem could be that your condenser and evaporator coils are just dirty and unable to transfer heat from one location to the next. Or, the problem may lie with a low level of refrigerant inside your system that needs to be recharged.

Leaking Fluid

One particularly frustrating issue you may end up experiencing is that your indoor air handler unit is leaking some sort of fluid. In a lot of cases, this fluid is simply water that’s leaking out of the drain pan. As your air conditioning system operates, it will remove excess humidity from the air that drops down into the drain pan. If there’s a clog in the drain line, then the drain pan will back up with water and eventually overflow under the floor.

Fortunately, if the liquid is water, it’s a fairly easy fix. All you need to do is unclog the drain line. If you hear a bubbling or hissing sound alongside the fluid, it’s a key indication that you have a refrigerant leak in your system. It’s very important to note that refrigerant is not something that you want to handle on your own, as it can be dangerous. Rather, you want to call in one of our repair technicians. They can provide proper repair service to stop the leak of refrigerant into the environment and repair your system.
