ABOUT THE FILTER PROGRAM

Waterbury’s Filter Replacement Program was created to answer the question that all too frequently arises when there is a cooling or heating problem. The question of: “When did you last change the filter?” For 50 years in the HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning) business we have heard that question asked over and over again, many times with a blank look and an “I’m not sure” answer. It is a fairly simple task, but frequently forgotten and usually remembered when a problem arises.

The filter program supplies, on a regular schedule, furnace filters directly to the homeowner’s door and we can even install it for you if requested! No need to spend any time with the inconvenient process and many times the costly mistake of not remembering to change the filter on time. Thus keeping cleaner, fresher air flow in the home and helping to extend the longevity of expensive heating and cooling equipment.

It is our goal to educate the average homeowner of the need to regularly change out the furnace filter and then replace it with the right size and efficiency rating for their particular home. When the filters show up at the door of our customers, they know it’s time to change it out, and no further having to remember to go to the store and once there guessing what size they need to buy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should your
filter be changed?

If a 1″ pleated, probably twice a year. If you have a 5” pleated filter, merv 10 or 16, you should be once year. It may be a bit quicker, depending on the conditons of your home.

Where is the filter located?

It is usually either inside the blower compartment of the furnace or in a filter box connected to the furnace.

What are the consequences of forgetting to change out the filter?

Every home furnace requires a filter change regularly. The typical recommendation is four times a year. Remembering to change the filter is critical, much like an oil change in an automobile, for proper, long term life of the furnace and air conditioning system, and to avoid unnecessary expensive service calls.

There are several consequences for dirty filters.
Dirty filters cause:

  • The furnace to overheat due
    to slow air movement
  • The air conditioning coil can freeze
up and cause improper air flow
  • The furnace efficiency is reduced by
    poor air circulation
  • The furnace heat exchanger may fail prematurely
  • Expensive service repair calls
  • Utility bills may increase due to lower efficiency
  • Air quality is affected with poor filtration

Remembering is difficult for several reasons:

  • Most furnaces are out of sight in
    a closet and forgotten
  • Life is busy, and changing a filter
    is not exactly top priority
  • No awareness of a need to change the filter
  • Where is the filter?
  • How often should it be changed?
  • What is the right size and type to use?
  • How do you change it?

How do I decide which filter grade to use?

Merv 8 is a minimum recommendation for a 1” filter. If you have a 1” merv rated more than a merv 8, there may be too much resistance on the blower of your furnace. That is why we recommend if we go to a merv 10 or 16, we need to use the 5” or greater media to give more passage and less stress on your blower on your furnace.

The higher the number, the more the air is filtered. For most homes, the highest number of filter rating suggested is a MERV 11 (our “best” recommended).

When was the last change
date for your filter?

There is more to life than remembering the life story of your furnace and air conditioning system. Wouldn’t it be a relief if someone would remember for you, and then supply you with a filter when it’s time to change
it out? Sign up today!
